The width measurement is not a true measurement but a technique to make a measurable distance.
If you want to determine the width of a river without walking through it, or just before going to walk through it, it is convenient.
When a strong flowing river forded it is advisable to do this when someone secures you with a rope.
Always take off your backpack and always make sure your line is longer than you need it to be.

Take a fixed point on the other side of the river and put a mark on your side of the riverbank. (most right flag in the drawing)
Walk a distance to the left and again put down a mark. (In the drawing, the middle flag) Go the same distance again. (Flag on the left)
Walk, at an angle of 90 degrees, from the river path until fixed point, the middle flag and yourself are on a line. The distance is marked with an A
now measurable. |
